Hypnotherapy is becoming one of America’s most popular self-healing modalities. But hypnosis is not a new modality; it’s been used since the beginning of man kind (although not recognized as hypnosis!) and more formally since the late 18th century to help patients with all sorts of ailments, stresses and concerns. ‘Researchers’ at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York showed that a 15 minute hypnosis session reduced side effects…. in patients undergoing breast cancer operations…. After their surgeries, the women who had hypnosis experienced less pain, nausea, fatigue, discomfort and emotional upset than their counterparts (who had talked to a psychologist who listed and offered supportive comments only) and these differences were substantial.”

The Society of Gastroenterology Journal Gut published the first long term study of hypnotherapy as treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Their study showed that 71% of people who used hypnosis were relived of symptoms. Also, most sustained positive results for up to five years.

Children who had been hypnotized in trials reported they had less pain from medical procedures as well as cancer-related pain.
“In one study, ‘All (40) children who used hypnosis with a local anesthetic felt much less pain than children who were just given the local anesthetic.’ Also adult cancer patients placed under hypnosis show few cancer-related symptoms such as nausea vomiting and pain.”

A meta analysis of 20 controlled studies found that patients who received hypnotherapy before or during surgery fared better than 89 percent of patients in control groups. Among the benefits were reduced anxiety, pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting, less blood loss and shorter hospital stays.

“New findings are leading major hospitals to try hypnosis to help relieve pain and speed recovery in a variety of illnesses.” The article went on to talk about numerous studies of the successful use of clinical hypnotherapy. One such being, Harvard researcher Carol Ginandes, found that patients with fractured ankles who used hypnosis for accelerated healing, “healed weeks faster than usual.”
Eighteen studies showed that clients who learned self-hypnosis lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t.

In a study done last year, women receiving cosmetic surgery were separated into three groups. The group that did hypnosis before and after surgery healed faster felt less discomfort and had fewer complications.
